Our History

The rich history of the Austrian confectionery specialist Hofbauer dates back to the year 1882, when Carl Hofbauer and his wife Juliane founded their confectionery shop in Vienna-Margareten. Carl Hofbauer was born in 1855 and made a career as a qualified baker and confectioner. With his sweet creations he was able to attract a broad clientele in Vienna. Within a short period of time, he gained recognition beyond the city borders as well. Hofbauer confectionery became the embodiment of high quality.

According to the slogan ‘in qualitate robur’ (quality is our strength), Hofbauer has grown to be the strong and admired brand it is today. Besides these constantly prevailing quality requirements, the great passion for chocolate has made Hofbauer an indispensable confectionery brand.

Closely connected to Viennese culture, the Hofbauer chocolate masters have been finishing their finest creations with special passion and special care since 1882.

A stroll through Vienna

Fidelio

"You did it!" You have climbed over 343 steps of the "Steffls", as the south tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral is also called. From here you have a breathtaking view over Vienna's city center. And if you look closely, you will find the characteristic roof ornamentation of St. Stephen's Cathedral on our Fidelio praline too.

Esterhazy Marzipan

In awe, we look up to the City Hall man. Emperor Franz Joseph I wanted the City Hall Tower not to exceed the 99m high Votive Cathedral. So Architect Schmidt built the City Hall Tower exactly 97.9m high. However, with the City Hall man on top, he reached a height of 103.3m - this trick was almost as refined as our sweet Esterhazy praline.

Secession

Underneath the interlaced golden leaf canopy ball of the Viennese Secession building, great artists like Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser enabled the Austrian population to view their unparalleled pieces of art. It thus is no coincidence that this leaf canopy is adorning Hofbauer's Secession praline.

Nougat Schüsserl

A view from the Upper Belvedere across the baroque gardens to the heart of Vienna – and it becomes instantly clear why Prince Eugene of Savoy cherished this place. Art, architecture, and nature merge here into a total work of art. In the magnificent halls hang masterpieces like Klimt’s The Kiss, while outside the sun paints golden patterns onto the paths. The perfect moment for our Nougat Schüsserl: fine nougat with a hint of almond – a small indulgence that evokes great art.

Mozart Ball in dark chocolate

In 1869, the Vienna opera was formally inaugurated with Mozart's "Don Giovanni". An extraordinary praline, named Mozart Balls, was created in honor of Mozart, one of the greatest Austrian musicians of his time. Just as Mozart, this praline has been enchanting people ever since.
